Population surpasses 53,500
On 1 August this year, the Faroese population reached 53,567, a year-on-year increase of 790 people, or 1.5 percent, reports Statistics Faroe Islands.
The overall population growth is made up of a net migration figure of 476 and an excess of births (the difference between live births and deaths) of 314.
Biggest increase in the capital region
As in previous years, Tórshavn municipality had the highest population growth, with an increase of 390 people (1.7 percent) over the past year.
In percentage terms, Hov municipality in Suðuroy saw the biggest population growth, with five more people, an increase of 5.2 percent on last year. This was followed by Nes municipality, which increased by 50 people (3.7 percent).
Vestmanna had the biggest population decline, with 11 people moving out of the municipality.
According to Statistics Faroe Islands, the immigration figure has decreased slightly over the past three years, while emigration is on a slight increase. The result is a slight dip in net migration, but this is counterbalanced by an excess of births over deaths, which is at its highest level since 2003.
